Is Your Smartphone or iPad Giving You a Pain in the Neck?

Do you suffer from headache, neck pain or shoulder pain? You could have text neck. Text neck is caused by people hunched over their mobile  devices for long periods of time texting, gaming, watching videos and e-mailing. This hunched position results neck strain, disk herniations, pinched nerves and straightening or reversal of the normal curve of the neck.
The average weight of the human head is 10 pounds in a neutral position (ears over your shoulders). For every inch your head is tilted forward the pressure on your neck doubles. When looking down at a mobile device the pressure on your neck is 20 to 30 pounds. This same posture can reduce the capacity of your lungs by 30%.
Proper posture can be achieved by rolling your shoulders back and keeping your ears directly over them so that your head is not tilted forward. We recommend taking frequent breaks from your mobile devices every 20 minutes.
